Interesting Connections

1 Conversation

I was born and spent the first 26 years of my life in Herefordshire. I now live in County Laois in Ireland.

In looking at stuff on the internet tonight (13-08-08) about a local heritage site called the Rock of Dunamaise I have come across some interesting connections to my birth county of Herefordshire.

Apparently, in the 13th Century it was in the hands of the Mortimer family from Herefordshire (Roger de Mortimer, who was regent for the young Richard III). There is evidence that land nearby was rented by one Walter de la Haye at the start of the 14th century. The de la Hay’s and Mortimers also owned the Urishay Castle Estate in Herefordshire. A cottage on the estate called “The Gate” was my home for 14 years from the age of 6 months.
