A Conversation for The annoyance of the letter H

This is another example of school screwing me up. From a young age I was always taught to put 'an' before words starting with a vowel and 'a' for words with a consonant. Fine, no problem, I live happily for years.
In my last 2 years at school, my English teacher suddenly announced to me that words beginning with h should also have 'an' in front. Since I also did History, I got this drilled into me with the example 'an historian'.
The big problem here is, it kicks back against what I learned and believed for years. I can't comfortably use 'an' to precede 'h' without feeling guilty.
The really big problem is that 'an h' sounds so much better than 'a h' and I don't want to admit it.
(For the record, I'm a/an 'haytch'er)

Yes I think we can safely say that school tarnishes anything that touches it.
