Feature Suggestion - External links in the right hand margin

Hi everybody,

external links appearing in the right hand margin (other than links to h2g2 entries) get truncated when too long. See A4014145 as an example. Perhaps it's possible to leave them intact and to line-wrap them, just as internal ones?

Yes, indeed; I'm using the TITLE attribute almost for every external link. But often the best descriptive TITLE is still too long for the margin, as in 'British UFO Research Association', and it ends up with ... smiley - biggrin

There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

They *are* wrapped in my browser (Mozilla). Always have ben. The problem I find is when an entire url appears in the entry data box - then the divider gets moved to the left, squashing the text into a narrower section down the left hand side of the entry.

This is sort of unrelated but to do with text wrapping.
I use firefox and when I hover over a footnote link not all of it appears...it always goes:

This was due to the wonders of the....

Which is annoying. I'm aware it doesn't happen in IE and shows the whole footnote so why is firefox being mean? Is this a setting or just something I have to put up with?

Kat

In this case, it's simply a difference in the way IE and Firefox handle the TITLE text. IE chooses to display it all, Firefox chooses to truncate it. It's nothing to do with what we're doing, and if there's a way we can code it to force Firefox to display the whole text, we'd do it.

Trust me, we're not favouring IE in any way. I run Firefox exclusively, as do a fair number of HTML developers, so these little 'features' annoy us as much as you.

Hi Jim,

thanks for your posting; I understand it's browser specific how the TITLE text is handled. Got to live with it, I suppose. However, quoting you - 'IE chooses to display it all' - well, no, I'm using IE6 and it also chooses to truncate. Maybe it's Mozilla that does not truncate. smiley - smiley

My IE6 SP2 also shows the whole text, while Firefox truncates. And if Mozilla shows the whole text, that implies it could be optional in Firefox.

Netscape does the same things as Firefox (same engine smiley - rocketsmiley - snowball)

Opera (on XP) gives smiley - weird results, the title for the -1 and 0 is completely ignored. The FootNotes get an introduction in the yellow popup

RFJS__ - trying to write an unreadable book, finding proofreading tricky

My experience has always been that Brunel truncates the right-hand TITLE links, but Goo and Alabaster don't. Which is the result A3892386 is still giving me (in Firefox).

RFJS, that's spot on! It's truncating in Brunel, but not in the other skins.
