The Rising Sun, London EC1
Created | Updated Jan 28, 2002
This is a little gem of a pub tucked away between Smithfields Market and the Church of St Bartholomew the Great in EC1. There are three principle reasons why it is special:
1. It is one of the few pubs in the area that opens on weekends.
2. It is a Samuel Smiths pub, and (even in London) this means that you pay £1.40 for a pint of Sam Smith's.
3. The bar snacks are exceptional not in their range, but in their obscurity. Pistachio nuts, cashew nuts, poppadoms, and chilli-flavoured peanuts are all there, with many other obscure eatables.
The Rising Sun is always worth a visit - on weekends there is little choice, and on weekdays it is always pleasantly full of 'normal' people, with not a suit in sight. And the tuesday night quiz is a great laugh.
