Could s/he have been abandoned by the parents because they sensed illness or weakness? I'm sure there's evidence for that from elsewhere, but I can't remember where I read it.

I'm certain she was the last one out of the nest, and one that the parents wouldn't have expected to make it anyway. So yes, I'd say she wasn't a priority for the parents, and was probably abandoned altogether.
