Unable to access Scout site

Howdy, gang. Forgot my password, lost my cookie, and can't access the h2g2 scouts website any more - and the usual routine for getting a new password isn't working properly. I'm not sure why - I think that my user information never got transferred over when e-groups was bought out by Yahoo.

I'm in the process right now of getting the system support guys at Yahoo to fix this, but that's always a complicated procedure.

So in case my turn comes up for picks and I haven't yet gotten back my access, would somebody let me know?

or.... If somebody knows a better way of getting a new password for me without all this foofooraw - that'd be great!

Thanks! - Lentilla

It pains me to say this but on the few occasions I've contacted the support staff at the site they have been most helpful & efficient, so stick with it.

If you really get stuck you could ask Chris to enrol as if you were a new scout & forget your old profile.

Hi Lentilla,

I suppose you know that you don't need Y!Groups and Y!Calendar any more, if all you want to do is just making your picks. But if you still want to have full access to Y!Scouts, you have to use your Yahoo accout. I see that you are a full member of the Scouts Y!Group, with Y!Account and everything. So what does exactly happen when you try to access Y!Scouts?

Jeremy

She deleted her cookie, so when she goes to the site it ask her for a username & password, of which she has forgotten at least one.

Hi Lentilla,

You shouldn't really ever really need to get onto the Yahoo site anymore - all your Scout picking is done on h2g2. All the posting on the Scouts list should be going straight to your email account as well, and you can post there by simply replying to those emails...

I think the Yahoo login is probably case-sensitive as well... I'll email you with your username, but you'll have to get your password off the Yahoo site itself. Good luck with that!

The Scouts site, while mostly unnecessary, does tell me when my picks are due - I've turned off the e-mail option because I was getting way too many e-mails.

Remembering the problem that I had with getting a new password for h2g2 smiley - winkeye I made sure to enter both a lower-case and an upper case version of my username, but the problem isn't recognizing my username. The problem is that the sign-in help page that's supposed to give you a new password has a couple of fields for you to enter information into (birthdate, zip code, country, and e-mail address) and when I enter that information, it tells me that the info is incorrect. I'm pretty sure that I remember my own birthday and zip code. I think the problem is that I've never needed to input that info since e-groups, and I wonder if it was ever ported over in the first place. Anyway, I've gotten the first generic e-mail back from Yahoo, and responded - they should get back to me soon.

Meanwhile, does anybody know when my picks are due? I'm thinking next Friday the 29th, but I don't know for sure.

Thanks, guys - Lentilla

I have set up 'message rules' to filter scout e-mail into a separate folder, so it my e-mail doesn't clog up, I find this sort of thing useful as I receive a high volume of e-mails (over 1000 so far this month) from a Varity of sources.

Ah-hah! Thanks.

I don't get quite that many e-mails. Three or four a day is about right - but this is after we've gone through our groups and changed all our preferences to 'site only' on the messages. Only recently has our free e-mail system began giving us the option to herd certain messages into certain folders - I might try that.

what do you use for e-mail ?

(most e-mail clients & most web-mail providers offer some sort of filtering)

I'm using the Altavista iname mail system. It works pretty well, although it's been kind of unreliable lately - they keep taking the server down for repairs.

It does, and I have not the slightest idea of how to use it! I need to sit around and play with it a while.

Hi Lentilla,

We really do need you to get email from the Scouts list - it's fairly important for notification of all sorts of things to do with Scouting, not least your Reminders (thanks for posting that one, HappyDude!).

If you like, we can arrange it so that all of the Scouts emails from each day are joined together into one long email - it's called a 'digest', so you'll only ever get one a day. Just say, and I can do it from here...

Naw. I really would prefer to access the Scouts messages through the Yahoo groups - my e-mail system is on-line anyway, so it's only a hop, skip and jump from there to Yahoo.

Thanks to Chris for figuring out what the heck was going on - this time it wasn't a case-sensitive problem; I just wasn't using the right username. Now everything is groovy...smiley - cool I just visited there and caught up with the backlog.

HappyDude - Is Eudora on a Windows platform, or is it a universal sort of thingie? Much of my web access is done from work on a Mac. At home I have an older Macintosh and a 133 Mhz PC. I think we could definitely get some use out of Eudora on the PC - thanks for the tip!
