There's some really good stuff here! I especially liked the idea of having an observation night - maybe for the next really good meteor shower we could ask Researchers to count the number of meteors they see (on an hourly basis calculated from GMT) to see the difference in shower activity across the globe.
Something like this might exclude Southern Hemisphere Researchers, but that's their own tough luck
This is one of the things that makes Astronomy nice - because it's so accessible. In archeology, only a select few can see King Tut's mummy, but in Astronomy, anyone can see the Crab Nebula if they look at the right place on the right night.

Oh, and I totally agree that we should have a notice board/drinking fountain where we can discuss stuff. My Observatory page attempts to do that on a small scale - with a list of upcoming sky events and some interesting links (both internal and external).
I'm hoping we'll soon get some feedback from Peta to see what direction TPTB envision us heading in. But maybe they're waiting for us to figure things out and so then can tell the rest of the community!

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
