Introduction



Mountains are essentially big hills. People generally imagine them to be rocky, pointed and snow-capped, but this is not always the case. Some, such as Table Mountain in South Africa, are more flat than pointed, and not all are snow-covered all year round.

  • At 8,848 metres or 29,030 feet the highest mountain in the world from sea level is Mount Everest in the Himalayas

  • The tallest mountain in the world when measured from base to summit is Mauna Kea in Hawaii at 10,200 metres or 33,500 feet

  • The tallest mountain in the Solar System is Olympus Mons on Mars at 26 kilometres or 85,000 feet
