A Conversation for Townies

Townies

Divy

Are we talking about any British town, or just those in the provinces?

Well it seems to sum up Coventry dwellers pretty well.

Specifically, I was thinking of Nuneaton.

But I wouldn't be at all surprised if it applied in other places.

Isn't that a bit inefficient? Espeically when I can just reply on this forum.

Now you're just being facetious

No I'm not, I'm just being my usual blend of sarcastic and ironic.

Shrewsbury has a splendid selection of Townies,
I like to call them mons, the study of which is
monism.

My Dad, stepmother and half brothers live in Shrewsbury.

We used to drive through Shrewsbury when we went on holiday, before they opened the by-pass. An absolute arm-pit of a place. Nice daffodils, though.

Exactly how is it supposed to be pronounced, anyway?

It's actually quite a nice town - not the most exiting I'll
grant you, but we have just got a multiscreen cinema which
seems to be a pretty neat idea.
Pronounced Shrose Berry historically, infact it used to be spelt
with an 'O' however these days only the toffs call it anything
other than Shrewsbury (as in shrew.)

I'll forego the obvious dead rodent jokes.

Phryne- 'Best Suppurating Actress'

Okeford Fitzpaine (pronounced Fippeny Ockford, so I'm told) takes the prize. Then there's Berkshire, trying to get out of the fact that its first syllable is a synonym for 'idiot'. Or am I the only one to mispronounce it?
Found! An American web-site devoted to 'stopping Teeny-Boppers'. It's clearly a personal commitment and a bit lackadaisical, but its principles are sound. Contributed by offering Townies as a British version of that particular scourge.
Worcester doesn't have many Townies. We could all go there and set up a Sanctuary.
