Nice psycholgical twist. Her powers of denial are so strong that she's willing to silence an uncomfortable feeling at any cost.
This reminds me of some of Algernon Blackwood's ghost stories.

I recommend you start with "The Willows", "The Wendigo" and "The Camp of the Dog" - because they're my favourites. For me, it's his descriptions of wild places that sets him apart. I love the way he writes.
