Most supermarkets in Sweden sell fresh asparagus all year around - imported from Peru when not in season locally...
Tomatoes are usually Dutch, grown all year around in gigantic greenhouses that no doubt use up a lot of energy for the heating. Swedish tomatoes are only in season for a few months, but I recently read on a food blog that tomatoes from the Canary Islands should be available, and in season. Must check it up, because the Dutch are very tasteless.

I'm on board with hydroponic veggies -- one of my neighbors in Lincoln had a hydroponic greenhouse, but he was a retired engineer and wasn't afraid of the plumbing. Or the chemicals.
And greenhouses are pretty energy efficient, aren't they?

I think it would be very beneficial to have foods only available 'in season', it would be environmentally sound and would help people connect food production with the the seasons....on the other hand I am incensed that I cannot walk into my local supermarket and and pick up a in June. I demand 24/7 christmas pud and I demand it now.

I am looking to start a blog in the near future and looking at review sites for such things it would appear Wordpress, Blogger and Tumblr are the front runners. Bearing in mind I am a tech eejit, which of these, or something else would the salon recommend?

Do you have a gmail account, Tod? I found Blogger easy to start out with, and you can use your gmail ID for it. Haven't tried the others.

I used Wordpress for a short bit, and found it fairly easy--unless you want to put lots and lots of photos in one blog entry and have text wrap around. Of course, that wasn't hard, just tedious... That, and I ran out of stuff to procrastinate about, so I didn't work on it much... Not Wordpress's fault that I can't come up with content on my own, of course--it's 2legs'

Don't use Tumblr, it wasn't designed to be a blogging platform and as such is a huge pile of dingoes kidneys when used as one.
I'd recommend WordPress, it's ridiculously easy to use and incredibly adaptable to what you want to use it for. It's also highly transferable, so if you start off with a blog hosted on WordPress.com you can easily transfer it to your own hosted site in the future.

I don't think I’ve got a gmail account, never had the need. I clicked on a few sites and was surprised to find I had already had a blog on blogger ! http://kayakanglingandphotography.blogspot.co.uk/ I had forgotten all about it. However I do recall it not being very intuitive. Tumblr looks good.

Tumblr was designed to put random images and links up online, and it kinda works for that. But as a blog it quickly runs out of features/functions.

I used Blogger with own hosting earlier - have switched to Wordpress.com and am happy with it!

I help set up several sites for other people, of varying technical abilities, and do generally use WordPress. It's *not* a replacement for hiring a web developer for a professional company site, but it *is* good for simple sites.

I use WordPress. Well, I did use it, when I blogged. It's easy.
I think the only seasonal produce we have now in the UK is Easter Eggs
I only buy fresh asparagus in April, and I only buy it once, because its just for me, and the amount of butter I put on it counteracts all the benefits of it being a fresh green vegetable. Similarly I only buy English strawberries in season. And I can never bring myself to buy blackberries because they should be free food from hedgerows. I usually pick and freeze a few tubs every autumn and that gives me enough for a blackberry crumble a few times a year. Also we have the allotment now so that provides the freezer with green beans and shredded cabbage.
I try hard not to buy fruit and veg that's been flown halfway round the world and/or grown in heated glasshouses. But I don't feel guilty if I do - people need the trade.

Hello, Asteroid Lil, Santragenius, Mags, Witty, Bald Bloke, and Amy P.
I use Wordpress software on my site. It's simple software that needs little attention. I started blogging back when you had to ftp everything. Wordpress is way easier. No matter what you want to do with your site, there's probably a wordpress plugin for it.
I quite agree with Asteroid Lil, Agribusiness is putting short term gains of a single crop against the entire salmon fishing industry. Agribusiness's attempts to lobby against salmon has made allies of salmon fishermen, environmentalists, and local tribes. It really doesn't make sense to pit one crop against an entire species, the industry that depends on it, and a traditional way of life. But that's what lobbyists are for, right?

Am now making bread. just leaving it to prove near the radiator.
While I'm thinking of love
Love is thinking for me
And the baker will come
And the baker I'll be
I am depending on my labour
The texture and the flavour

I'm waiting for the potatoes to be finished. It's spring weather so we've been in cleaning mood all morning, but I kept myself from cleaning the windows, it's just to early to do that.
