That's unfortunate, b/c the debate was just beginning to move on past the vietnam era.

Here's a column by Paul Krugman, where he talks about a book about the "war mentality" of a country, and why that tends to cause people to accept their leaders no matter how bad they are:

Lil, there are those states now that traditionally vote one party over another in Presidental elections--for instance, Utah votes Republican and New York votes Democrat. Everyone relies in advance on these states to vote for either Bush or Kerry this year. And they're the ones in which Ralph Nader would like to see people vote their conscience and vote for a third party candidate (preferably himself). Other states that have swung wildly in past election years, like Wisconsin or Ohio, Nader said outright he would rather see Kerry take the majority vote and thus the electoral college votes.

Ah, good - we've moved. It was getting a bit untidy over there, what with the styrofoam coffee cups and the mangled pictures of Bush... *surreptitiously hides magic marker behind back*

I did say I was going to move to Canada if Bush was elected again... I don't know that I can hold to that promise.

Bush almost certainly believes that the Rapture is coming, and that he, along with his voting base, will be taken up into heaven. What none of the born-again Christians realize is that Revelations is not prophecy, it's political commentary. Revelations is about Nero and the subjugation of the Jewish people to the Romans. (The seven-headed beast is supposed to be Rome, and 666 comes from adding the letters together of Nero's name.) It was called a prophecy so that the writers could escape prosecution.

I've met very few Christians who actually study the Bible and understand it. Bush is no exception.

This is a recapitulation of the segment of last night's "60 Minutes" about Bush's military records.

The Rove team sent a Dan Quayle-like young fellow to rebut and call it lies and damned lies -- he never knew it was a sacrificial altar, not just a TV appearance.

I read a NY times account about the CBS show, and the documents. I still think Kerry should go after the issues. I hope he gives this minimal attention. I'm going to go over to the Kerry website.

Here's a website which has a lot of the polls:
http://www.pollingreport.com/wh04gen.htm

The one I like is in which they reversed the order of the candidates when they asked the question. When they do that, the poll numbers switch from 53-45 (Bush-Kerry) to 46-46. What do you make of that?

I hope I'm not tempting fate by saying this, but I get a sense that a corner has been turned in the campaign. The polls coming out at the moment are likely to be the gloomiest we've seen, because they'll have been taken during or just after the Republican convention, which was undeniably effective.

But this has been a nightmare week for Bush, with all the headlines turning to casualties in Iraq and some embarrassing details from his own past. And next week we have the Kitty Kelley smiley - book - already #6 on Amazon's best-sellers list on the strength of pre-publication orders. If the rumours I've seen about what's in that are even close to the truth, it's going to have one hell of an impact. smiley - evilgrin

Most importantly, though, from the reports I've seen over here it looks as though Kerry has finally started fighting a positive campaign, attacking Bush on the issues where he's most vulnerable - especially the economy.
