Entry: The United States of America and Americanism - A2965133
Author: Jodan - What's that green stuff on the lawn? - U201497

Well, I'm tired of being stubborn (I still think that the update forum should be used for all updates), but I'm more tired of the old entry on America- A260461.

In the old update forum thread F1879346?thread=509837 from last October, I was advised to enter three split up entries into PR. So I am. This entry is intended to replace the original entry, with the other two, a history and a list of landmarks and the states, seperate but linked.

This particular entry is sort of an overview and things that define the country. I'm very willing to collaborate with others on this entry, as it's a huge subject and I just don't have every bit of knowledge in the world in my head.

I'd love some good comments that I can use at quotes... a visitor's impression, a citizen's thoughts. I can probably squeeze it into one of the three entries. For instance, if you have something to say about your particular state or a state you've been to, or a landmark, go to the PR forum of A3776196 and let me know.

A very interesting trilogy...hard to imagine doing it up so well in 6,000 words or less.

A couple of spelling questions:
- mountians > mountains?

- midwestern states > Midwestern?

- he favoured a largely industrial nation, while the great politicians from Virginia favoured a country of farmers > was the repetition of 'favoured' desired?

- of seperation of powers to the Constitution > separation?

I definitely like this better now that it's been broken down into the component pieces, but think that the title as it stands is a little misleading.

Open to a possible title change?

The ones I can think of are all on the cheesy side, though.... This is what happens when I come on hootoo after frying my brain at work all day:

* Being American
* The Embodiment of Americanism
* Paradigms of Americanism
* The Quintessence of Americanism

Surely someone out there has better ideas than me?

Well, I would like to have The United States of America in there so it's obvious that this should replace the current entry, which y'all know I don't like.

The first and third ones aren't bad though. smiley - smiley

Personally, I think either of the other two would be better choices to replace the current entry. Myself, I would probably take the very first bits from this entry, tack them onto the states entry, and make that one simply "The United States of America", and leave this one just about Americanism.

*Oogles* Bravissimo!

I think you've been quite thorough. I mean, if the Guide can call Earth "Mostly Harmless." then you're doing pretty good.

I agree about limiting this article to 'Americanism'. The only part I think would need to me moved/removed is the section on civil war and Hamilton's Federalism... although I would like it even more if you kept those parts and spent a little time discussing how Hamilton's politics and the polarization of the two-party system have become a fundamental part of 'Americanism'.

Too bad the Northwest doesn't get very much mention... but then, we've always been off in our own little world anyway!

"The only part I think would need to me moved/removed is the section on civil war and Hamilton's Federalism"

What section on the Civil War? There's a section on Federalism (the seams one). The enduring discussion about Federalist versus States rights advocates has become one of the fixtures in American politics. I reckon it deserves its place.

The Hamilton section isn't really about Federalism at all. It's about partisan politics, capitalism and the American Dream. They just fall under the header 'Hamilton's Country' because it's convenient to put them there instead of giving them each their own sections as Hamilton had a lot to do with each of those three things.

The northwest has some mentions in A3776196smiley - smiley Probably a little paragraph about the Pacific very soon too.

Improbably, when I set aside some time to work on the entry, someone made an unexpected visit, so I didn't have time to work that out. I do intend to make some changes that Mikey asked for.

But now... I'm off to a baseball game smiley - smiley

Okay, I've worked this entry out a little bit. It's now 'Americanism', though I'm still considering 'Being American'. Not sure about the title yet.

I'm also going to write a section on driving, I think.

But thanks for the advice Mikey. I'm still working on the States entry, but that should be fixed up before long.

Jodan, I just wish you were willing to take on big topics, instead of limiting yourself like this. smiley - winkeye

I could offer up a whole list of things I think are important that you've left out, but I won't. You've covered enough areas to make this entry EG material without having it be so long that nobody will take the time to read it.

Good job!
