A "local" exam (60 multiple choice questions) is given in March to high school chemistry students around the country. It is called local because the results are by region; however, the exam itself is national. The top 8 students from each region take the national test (60 multiple choice questions, a short answer section, and a lab) about a month later, and the top 20 nationally go to the air force base in Colorado for extra instruction. The best four of those 20 then go to the international competition.
