A Conversation for Shotokan Karate

Kiai

Post 1

Simetra

Kiai, although a shout, translates as
Ki (also known as chi, qi, prana) = energy, life-force, spirit.
Ai = harmony
as in Aikido - the Way of Harmony

When we Kiai in karate, it is expressed as a shout that comes from the Hara(stomach area)
this combines with the Kime(focus). In other words, the Ki brought to one point of focus at the
completion of a karate technique.

The actual sound made with Kiai will vary depending technique, it tends to be in most
cases a extended vowel sound.
