fullerine (fulleryne?) is impossible - the carbon atoms have too low a coordination in sp hybridized state. Fullerene is possible though...

I prefer the International as opposed to Royal.

I think "International H2G2 Academy of Sciences" is better.

The h2g2 society of science seems better with a Royal appointment, although I'm from Hertfordshire, so I would!!!

Thanks for voting everyone! I'd like to wait a bit longer before I tally them.

This is why I don't want the word 'Royal' anywhere near the name.

Also, Prince Charles is an anti-scientific reactionary. Several good reasons there I think.

Well, I think it's time to close the polls. International wins, with 4 votes (I voted for international).

'royal' - who said it's the English royalty?

What about something in the lines of:

"H2G2 society for the advancement of science"

or "H2G2 - SAS"

But the current one is good.

Maybe we could keep it dynamic and change the name every now and then.

Why not include the name of a worthy scientist to give it gravitas. Not Newton or Einstein, not only have they been lauded to death, but it makes it sound too vox pop. Someone with a reputation that will be recognisable to everyone with a real interest in science but alien to those with just a passing interest. For example: Johannes Kepler.

Good Idea... And the names could change every 6 months...

How about a name for the thread? I mean, the RSC has Faraday Transactions, Perkin Transactions etc.

I suggest we have separate threads for Physical, Organic and Inorganic discussions. We could name each one after a well-known (to other chemists) chemist.

I don't think this is good (yet) with 4 or so chemists on site, that would make one per sub-group. Maybe we first chit-chat about chemistry on a general level, and see how it develops?

I agree, we'll probably end up with four groups: Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. I wouldn't like to see a 'ghettoising' of the differing branches - isn't it one of the aims to have a science as a whole forum for discussion and debate?

I think the name change is cool...and naming threads would be cool too. We could name the chemistry subdivision after a famous chemist? How about Pauling?

What about Terra Science?, also known as rocks and all that jazz!!!

As for the chemistry thread I have no problem with Linus Pauling, but the 'father of chemistry' was Lavoisier - but would people abbreviate it too the Lav Threadsmiley - wah

I was thinking Lavoisier - but I didn't realize he was the father. Yeah, we should go with him. Or Debye, or ... Huckel smiley - smiley anyhootoo

The rocks one would be great for the geology subdivision.

I think for now we want all the subdivisions in this entry. If it grows we can expand to a subdivision per entry.

Anyone read Huckel? Pauling was not such a nice pal...
