A Conversation for Weird HTML characters

What a wonderful list of strange glyphs, but so many do not show up in my Netscape(?) 4.7 browser.
For example (and I'll add underscore characters "_" to "break" the html tag so those of you who CAN see, will NOT see it):
gamma &_gamma_;
I see no Greek gamma. I see only the name, and the html tag.
Why?
