HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD RIGHT NOW?

this is kind of a personal thing for me so hear me out, i have 2 sons and they are 11 and 12 years old. i just bought them some pellet guns for summer when we go camping so they can learn how to shoot.
well, today i just got a phone call from the vice principal from the school, and my son and another child were arguing with each other and my son said that he has a gun and would shoot this kid BUT IN JOKING!!
but now, she said that if we did have a gun in the house, she would have to get the police involved and my son would be in alot of trouble!
so tell me, what can i do to keep him out of trouble and not say stupid things like that anymore?
