The h2g2 Poem

1 Conversation

Fading...

Our last kiss persists on my trembling lips;

The tastes of mint and anise mingle.

Your scent lingers when you pass,

Not heady perfume;

Rather, fresh-scrubbed skin in clean clothing.

Your infrequent touch is furtive, unsure;

I sense you drifting away.

Sometimes, I hear you laugh in another room,

But not as often with me.

Even so, my mind's deepest recesses

Echo with sounds of our distant lovemaking.

Warm sunshine once washed over us

As we lay in fields of green;

Days of summer spent together,

The best I have ever seen.

We talked for hours, and built gilt towers

On our castles in the air;

Arranged our dreams into neat schemes,

For the life we knew we'd share.

We dined in style, and all the while,

Conversed in harmony.

We raised a toast and made the most

Of kindred company.

Hand-in-hand we walked the strand;

Warm surf swirled round our feet.

Our passions clear, I held you near,

Our bodies bathed in heat.

Long ago and far away

The fire of your love was all I could see.

It has dimmed so much,

No ember remains to stoke into flames.

Just cold dark charcoal,

Crumbling at my touch.

Bit by bit, I lose another piece of you.

The memory of flaxen hair draping your green eyes

Is veiled in shadow, and

I feel it slip into

The void.

Grief engulfs me, inundates my soul

When I think I'll soon awake and find

No remnants of you for me to cling to

Now that I've gone blind.
