There was (is) such a thing as a ... a ... magnetometer (?), towed on a string behind HM ships, for the purpose of 
sonar or something.
As I might recall, it was sometimes referred to as the zulu because it was the very last thing

hydro phones were towed behind ships so that sonar would work and not have a huge blind spot right behind the ship due to the action of the ships screws
magnetometers, were i think towed to set off the german magnetic mines dropped by bombers around port installations during WWII

Hydrophones, yes.
Magnetometers (or some such) were in use well past then - come to think of it, it was probably in my reserve time, post-service, on minesweepers.
and that was a bugger - 9 year service "...with no compulsory reserve time". Come the day, however... 2 years - compulsory.

the flying squad were a branch of the police nicknamed the sweeney
