Preston Guild, the 'party' alluded to in the title, dates right back to 1179, when King Henry II granted to Preston, then a small township, a Guild Merchant Charter. By this Charter, Preston was granted 'Market Town' status, and was given permission to hold markets, elect it's own Mayor, and appoint Burgesses.
Celebrations were held afterwards in a haphazard fashion, until 1542, when it was decided that celebrations be held bi-decennially in perpetuity.
However, the actions of a certain Herr Adolf Hitler led to the cancellation of the 1942 Guild. It was decided, however that a Celebration would take place as soon as it could be arranged after the war was won.
The first postwar guild was held in 1952-(The year of my birth!) and carried on in 1972, 1992, and the next is due in 2012, fortuitously co-inciding with the London Olympics.
As people descend from the four corners of the globe to witness the Guild Celebrations, the 2012 Guild looks like being the biggest ever!
Despite many towns being awarded a Charter over the centuries, Preston is the only one celebrated nowadays!
