Well, Scandinavian runes *have* been read, yes. But these Scandinavian runes were not read, and never will be. What's *quite interesting* about it is that so many people were convinced that they *were* runes, and were convinced that they had in fact read, and translated them.
Which would tie in with "Lost in non-translation".

Can this be the pictographic inscriptions at Newgrange in the Irish Republic which were found on the kerbstones and the grave passage stones that can only be seen on the sun- in day (I think that is Midwinter sundown)

Maybe that was a copy of the US Internal Revenue Code, washed up from the sea after being thrown overboard by a disgusted wealthy Federalist on his way abroad with all his untaxed money. That's why no one can read it. Washed ashore, ink ran and bled through the paper, then slapped on the rock by the wind. Ink runs out reversed, inverted, and legalese onto innocent rock, then local natives, too disgusted to see a tax document in their fair land, proceed to chip all the ink out. Native population - radical leftist libertarians.
