There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Posted Apr 1, 2005
Send an email to h2g2 dot support at bbc dot co dot uk with as much information as you can - username, password, email address you used to register, and they might be able to help you, although I believe with accounts as old as those in the 40,000s it might not be possible to resurrect it since Single Sign On.
And since it's now something like 6pm on a Friday, you might not get a reply until Monday morning.

There have been several changes to login procedure since that account was created. The latest of which, SSO, removed the ability for the oldest accounts to be translated to the new system unless they had been used/updated in between. So you may have lost that one forever if you haven't kept up with the changes.
To check for certain, you could email h2g2.support at bbc.co.uk (the general problems area) or membership at bbc.co.uk (specifically setup for SSO problems).
