Boromir or Faramir?

So he was a match in courage and valor, not with a sword though...

When Osgiliath came under attack, Faramir was one of the first at the scene, with a sword in his hand, AND NO ARMOUR!! He could have stayed behind with the archers, but he didn't.

Archers in urban warfare are pretty useless, its what makes modern urban warfare so difficult. It was either grab a sword or scarper to open terrain

Then you can tell me why, after being forced away from the river, he gets told to get out of the way so the archers have a clear line of sight? He could have stayed with them!! And anyway, as limited as the bow may be in urban area, the sword is even more limited in a geurilla strike unit such as Faramir commanded in Ithilien. What's more, the Númenoreans where renowned amongst friend and foe for their dreaded 'steel-bows'.

because there was a small area of space. No doubt there were other such areas across osgiliath, but there small. Not only that but the orcs could take cover behind the rocks (of just swarm en masse) or just flank the position by working round the rubble.
The sword is the better of the two because urban warfare can get extremely close (e.g. turn a corner and theres your opponent) so a sword, sheild, or even a dagger, is a lot better then a bow for the environment

No, he has archers, and he has regular infantry. He deploys his infantry to defend the bank, and stays with them, while the archers are deployed behind him. He could also have stayed with the archers, and have the infantry keep the orcs from advancing, but he doesn't.

exactly because of the terrain. In the terrain given he had to lead from the front (numbers coming over the river etc) and when he called the retreat they could all fall back

Why did he have to lead from the front? You haven't given any reason why he should lead from the front. The only reason is to motivate his men, to let them see he is sharing the danger. And that shows that he is noble, valorous and definately not a chicken.

Thats what he had to do. The Spartans did it, William Wallace did it in Braveheart, Aragorn did it at the black gate (etc etc). By having such a person at the front it inspires the men, urging them onto great deeds.

However, i reckon that Boromir would have done a much better job, mainly because of the sequence from the extended where hes stood on top of osgiliath with a banner, having lead the retaking of the city.

Boromir had more men, and Boromir was beaten back in the first place when the nine crossed Anduin. Wich is why it had to be retaken in the first place.
