Hi Hypatia
I'm just home after a long trip away and am soothed by the Cranky One. Thank you!
Basil and tomato are good things together - both in the garden and on the plate!
And another great reference for UK h2g2ers is Bob Flowerdew's He is a god of organic (proper!) gardening in UK.

Another cranky cracker! Your gardening knowledge is awesome. You so have to keep these for a book me dear...Alan Titchmarsh eat your heart out!
We have a tiny green in the village surrounded by two rivers. Every year someone plants a Christmas tree on the green. Every year it dies...when will they ever learn? Conifers need copious water but hate to have their roots submerged. As we have a high water table by the rivers, their roots are constantly submerged hence their annual demise. Letters to the council explaining this fall on deaf ears but it does amuse in a tragic kind of way. It's that commerce over caring thing again eh Hypatia?
take care

Hi boots
Can you persuade them to plant a willow or an alder instead? Then put lights all over it in December? It'ld save money all round - and trees.
