Could somebody explain Softball to me? Seeing as I'm in the team, it could be useful knowing what kind of game it is smiley - smiley

I thought it was the same as Rounders....?
I never liked rounders.

Softball is similar to baseball, which probably isn't much help. I'm told it is a distant relative to rounders.....

As far as I know, softball differs from baseball only in that you use a bigger ball and pitch underhanded... I don't know much about sports apart from basics like that. I'm not even sure what rounders is.

Rounders is a game where you hit a ball very hard and run round and round in a circle, with people on bases. As I didn't like it, I don't know what the difference between that and Baseball is, though I think that you only hold the bat with one hand.

As far as I can see, baseball is exactly like rounders but with these differences:
1. It's American, so it must be cool
2. They wear loads of protective clothing
3. They're not very good at catching the ball, so the players have to wear really large gloves to be able to catch it
4. They get paid for playing it
5. They have EXTREMELY cheesey music playing
6. People actually WATCH it
7. That might have something to do with the vast quantities of alcohol consumed while watching

Not too far off, although my favorite team, the Chicago Cubs, can't even catch WITH gloves.....

So, TVF, oh great guru, what is the difference, then, between softball and baseball?

1) Baseball small, softball big (although not that big, just big compared to baseball)

2) The pitcher throws the ball overhand in baseball, often as hard as humanly possible. In men's softball, the pitcher must throw the ball to the batter underhand, in a slow arc. In women's softball, they also throw it underhand, but much faster. This will be the last mention of women's softball in this post, only because I don't know the rules.......we might ask Natski, who apparently is a fearsome third baseman when she isn't on H2G2, which come to think of it isn't that often anymore.....never mind

3) Baseball - 9 fielders playing defence at once. Softball - 10 fielders. The difference is in the outfield, where there are 4 instead of three. Why? Beats me.

4) Softball is easier to play on a recreational level, because the ball is not thrown as fast, nor is it hit as hard.

5 thru 1000) There's lots more, but that's enough for now. Nap time smiley - smiley

So what is the official difference between Softball/Baseball and Rounders?

I think it's similar, but more official and they have leagues and stuff; as opposed to rounders, which is just played by primary school pupils, not even by choice. Same as football here compared to soccer in the US, I suppose.

Is that part of the rules of Baseball?
I gather (from "The Naked Gun") there's spitting involved - is that why we play softball instead?

Softball is safer - especially because O.J. isn't involved

It seems to be traditional for pro baseball players to chew tobacco--or at least it used to be. I'm not sure if this has carried over into softball.

Only the catchers in baseball wear protective clothing. The others only wear helmets when batting.

In the UK, it is traditional for football players to chew gum, then spit it everywhere in a revolting manner.
