And now for something completely different...

This is the first of a series of Entries I'm working on - the others planned so far are 'Programming', 'Commands and Parser' and 'Puzzles', so if you find those subjects aren't covered too well by this Entry, don't worry.

Hi Alex, I had a gander at this, it looks intriguing, but will have to wait a bit, I've promised to read some other entries first. It reminds me of the very first text base adventure I played decades ago, on an Apple:
Mask of the Sun. It was quite sophisticated for the time; we experimented with the commands it would take. The guy who helped in the story was Raoul. We once typed the command: Kick Raoul - completely off topic, but the reply we got was: Raoul kicks you back. smiley - biggrin
I'll never forget that. smiley - laugh

Brilliant idea, Alex, and as Jon says, I look forward to seeing how it develops. smiley - ok

I have one nagging problem, though. This entry is entitled 'How to...' but it nowhere says how to do it. You have jumped into the plot elements (and you cover those very well), but someone reading this will say, "Yes, but *how* do I get my plot elements into a text adventure game? Do I write them down as narrative, or in a list? And then what happens next?"

I guess that future installments will answer some of these, but I think you need an overview of the entire process to put this into context. It might be a section at the beginning of this entry, or it may be a separate entry altogether.

A couple of typos I spotted:

which in others the story simply occurs >> which should be while?

let the player uncover those parts as the progress. >> as they progress

ridding the player of all their pointless items before they more on to the next part of the game. >> before they move on

Rather than the game just providing them, on the games we played you could request a hint. Sometimes you would get one and sometimes you wouldn't, and sometimes you had to ask several times. I thought I'd never catch the silly babelfish out of the dispenser, and I was very glad the hints were imbedded (as opposed to the ones where you had to send off for a hints guide at an additional charge). But this probably isn't all that relevant.

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
