College Bars of Oxford University

Attempts to drink in every college bar in Oxford are not for the faint-hearted. There are not only 36 colleges but also a number of halls, several of which have sherry cabinets. This makes the task almost impossible in one evening, not least as opening hours and the degree of public access granted vary wildly between colleges. The best route to attempt to follow would begin at Magdalen, move along the High taking in the very friendly bars in the colleges lining it, go up through Lincoln, Exeter and Jesus, move on to Balliol and Trinity, then Wadham, New, Hertford, Brasenose, Christ Church, Pembroke, Worcester, Someville, Keble and finally St John’s. This route clearly excludes many of the colleges. This is for the best. The best value for money will be found in Queen’s and Univ. The best bar is in New. The best railway carriage is in Wadham. The latest opening bar (9pm) is in Hertford, which also has the best collection of road signs. The best Swedish hotel bar from the 1970’s is in St John’s. The bridge of the Starship Enterprise is in Keble. Though stopping here would probably prevent you reaching the hospitable Scandinavians of St John’s, this probably represents the best chance for a Hitchhiker to get home. Just beware the natives: though bricks won in the Keble wll game make ideal souvenirs, they are worshiped as gods by the students of Keble, who object to their removal.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
