Could somebody PLEASE explain to me exactly how the 
smiley is laughing? It looks to me more like a face with two tight-lipped mouths...

The smiley is leaning backwards holding his/her/its tummy and doing a belly laugh.

Yeah, the 2 dots at the top are eyes, the big dot in the middle is the open mouth and the 2 lines on either side are the arms.
