But are flame wars always bad?

I think not, and I have made this point consistently over the years I've been on this site.

I think some of the best conversations I've read on this site have been epic arguments, interspersed with amusing and creative personal insults. Long after I will have forgotten yet another polite discussion in the forum about crime and punishment, some of the really toasty flame wars will stay with me. (Of course they all run on and get too boring in the end, that I will give you).

Further, I would argue that based on the number of postings that rapidly accumulate in such threads, I'm not the only hootooer that likes to put on their asbestos underwear and warm their hands on the campfire. Or maybe even give the logs a prod...

Conflict is human - pure objectivity is given to few and is generally very off putting. On this site it is possible to interact with some
one over a certain period of time and therefore get a feeling for whether you like them or not as a person. I see nothing wrong with telling someone ocasionally that not only do you not like their arguments, you also don't like them.

Finally, with the exception of genuinely dangerous situations (unlikely in virtual space) nobody likes a dogooder. On the occasions where I have seen ACEs and other people of that inclination interfere in arguments, it has made me want to chew on my keyboard. I fear the strategic placing of is likely to make me feel the same way.

Regards,

sprout

I meant this bit:

"A committed FootiNooti Patroller would keep a "FootiNooti!" always primed and ready to release into the growing tension before a thread implodes into a hootoo brouhaha. "

Unless it was entirely tongue in cheek, in which case I did miss the meaning.

smiley - toffeeapple An important point though, Sprout, is that flaming is against the rules (that sounds so a*al smiley - sadface). It may be allowed to pass in journals but has no place in the public arena such as Ask and SEx and the Forum. So I have to say I disagree with your central point.

smiley - toffeeappleI also would reiterate that everything on the page is tongue in cheek - as alerted by the first line smiley - winkeye

smiley - toffeeapple just to put a complete twist on things, I have to say that I have espied one case of FootiNooti-like activity in the last couple of days and it was admirably performed.... by an avowed adversary of the whole FootiNooti nambypamby, tutti frutti nannying crusade smiley - tongueincheek

smiley - musicalnote I'm loving it! smiley - musicalnote

smiley - crossAnd scared you should be. smiley - grr Turning the fine institution of FootiNooti into a marshmallow of Political Correctness.
smiley - steam How's a fella to make those unreasonable folks who won't do things our way see the light, eh? There's only one way, yesirree, and that's with a clay dove, shot between the eyes - wham! - just like that! smiley - starsmiley - starsmiley - star

smiley - peacedove

smiley - steam Get those daisies and peace signs smiley - peacesign off my parade grounds, woman! Where are the troops going to duck-march in the morning, eh? And I demand a sh00ting range, so we can practice sh00ting clay doves at bulletheaded trolls - pow! - just like this - to make them see the light. See the light I say! smiley - eureka

smiley - peacedove

smiley - steam And I want scouts. I want scouts scouring the forums for flaming and trolling. At the slightest hint of personal insult the troops will sweep down on those bullet-headed trolls and give them a clay dove - bang! - right between the eyes! Make 'em see the light, we will, aye. smiley - grr

smiley - peacedove

smiley - steam Yessirree. I don't give with none of this namby-pamby, lets-be-friends, passive candy-appleness. Aggression! Attack them before they attack you! That's what we should be about! Shoot the flamin' trolls before they shoot you! Zing! Right between the eyes!
If they don't like us and what we stand for we take 'em out before they can protest. Clay doves'll do it. Right between the eyes. Like this - blam! - that'll show 'em the light, it will.

smiley - evilgrin Hey, it's a job like any other. Somebody's got to do it. smiley - winkeye

You must be swelling with pride (re: the mentioned activity, not my newfound fanatacism). smiley - laugh The more avowedly against FootiNooti one is, the more polite they must consequently be in their posts. smiley - winkeye
