The Eyre Affair Jasper Fforde - one helluva read smiley - smiley

How can any bookworm( not just those reared by mycroft, smiley - winkeye fail to enjoy this literary adventure. It's a bit like going on a rollercoaster ride...
What an imagination to write a book about books , and about books merging with reality and crossing all time barriers.
I read Jane Eyre years ago and it all came flooding back.I'll probably read it again now but it will never be the same again!
I even think he may have found a way to introduce reluctant readers to the classics.
It was ingenious the way each chapter started with a quote from an imaginary book(diary, biography or whatever) which gave us background info about the characters and their opinions as well as helping to set the atmosphere. It's strange because it's easy reading yet thick with puns , humour and surprises.
Finally how could I not love an author who includes my hometown in the plot - albeit as a tiny detail- when Victor tracking Dr Muller assumes a new idenity. Thanks Jasper? That brought a smile to my face, and made it even more personal.

I'm now torn between reading all the others back to back or saving them to savour over a long periodsmiley - smiley
thanks for the recommendations lbagpuss
smiley - hug eety

His books are basically JRR ilk, with his own touches, sort of with a very mild lighter touch, but still very cleverly written and compulsive

The best ones are the Shannara series, although each book does in some way link back to the others, they are all written in a way that each book can be treated as an individual piece.

His first book is The Sword of Shannara, but later on in the series he wrote a prequal called The First King of Shannara, you could start with either.

i have just finished Firestorm the fifth in the weatherwarden series - just as good as the others and written at a furious pace - all through the book you are aware that serious things are going to happen to Joanne and i read it in a kind of panic thinking that it would be the last one but NO a new one is due in July 2007 - long time to wait but at least i can now concentrate on the books that are awaiting my attention smiley - biggrin
