L M Montgomery, Michael Ondaatje, today's most fascinating... I thought the latter was South African! (Must be the name...)

Actually, the one I just added is quite exciting and humerous.

Post 8

I just added two interesting names at the end. It's probably surprising to most that the last one is actually a Canadian.smiley - laugh

There are endless lists in NZ media, about famous NZers... Some of whom actually aren't! I remember one guy on NZ TV being congratulated on his achievements as a NZer, he grinned and said 'but I am not!' The interviewer was wekk embarassed!smiley - laugh

smiley - ermThat's *well* embarassed, of course...

It seems that many people move to Canada and are quite happy to suddenly identify themselves as Canadians (particularly after their citizenship comes through). There are also large numbers of people born in Canada who spend most of their working lives outside their native land and yet still identify themselves as Canadian.

I have a hard time imagining a television interviewer making that mistake here: if someone didn't want to be identified as a Canadian, we'd know it and accept it, before we introduced them on television.smiley - laugh

Because of a kind of insecurity about NZ, New Zealanders tend to ask someone just after they come through Customs "how do you like New Zealand so far?"
NZ is small, coldsmiley - brr and provincial. Many NZers want desperately for the country to be liked, and so they can get quite desperate to be seen as important, especially by the USA and in the USA! Hence the right wing here obsessing about whether the Americans hate us for not going into the Coalition of the Killing.
Thousands of people are claimed as NZers if they have lived here at all - Austin Mitchell, Fay Weldon and Ilona Rodgers being 3 'New Zealanders' I took for granted were 'Kiwis' when I was a child. Sam Neill (Irish) apparently *wants* to be known as a New Zealander. Anna Paquin and Kate Winslett (both labelled as 'Kiwis') aren't on record as giving an opinion.
Courtney Love, Kevin Sorbo and Russell Crowe have all lived here, but Courtney hated it here and has a bad reputation, Kevin hated it here and is too well known as *not* being a 'Kiwi' and Russell Crowe has disgraced himself. That's why they aren't "claimed".
On the other hand, Ernest Rutherford, Nyree Dawn Porter, Dennis Lill and Katherine Mansfield *are* or were NZers.smiley - laugh

My point is that she *isn't* a Kiwi, she is just one of those people our media choose to claim as one! In her case it's because she lived here when she was about 9, and was in 'The Piano', a movie I hate because it cost me a fiance! (Long story)smiley - sadface
