USSR stood for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which is pretty plain and common English. If the Russian name happened to fall under the same acronym, then I would like to know the English translation of that. I suppose one could be content to simply call it Russia and blow all that Marxist nonsense to pandemonium.
