You sound like fun at a party!!
That sounds fair, but wasn't Atilla a Methodist like his brother, Bruce the Hun?

*Bruce the Hun (circa 406-53), brother of the king of the Huns. One of the least feared and meek barbarians of all time, Bruce is believed to be of distant Mongol stock tempered by his devout Methodist religion, he ignored much of the European continent during the 5th century AD. Apparently Bruce was no menace to the Teutonic tribespeople or the Romans. Famous for his recipes for stuffed vine leaves with flower garnishes.*
No, really!

Hello, Lemon Blossom. Unfortunately, the membership list for this page doesn't seem to get updated these days, but I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Consider yourself a member with full access to accompanying perks and privileges - ie, none at all.
I would say, feel free to jump in and start making some interesting contributions... but I see you already have done.

Sorry about that, Lear. I sort of gave up on the project. It was becoming increasingly clear that it was falling short of my expectations.

That's a pity Blatherskate. I enjoyed what little *debate* I had here. Did you want it to become something in the classical debate style? That might be dificult in this format since you would need similar time zones, a moderator, etc.

I wasn't interested in structure so much as behavior. I like an argument that sticks to its subject matter, addresses the points raised by the other side, and doesn't make it personal. It was quickly apparent that, apart from rare occasions, that isn't at all possible around here without some active policing. I have no interest in police work.
You can still get nasty and personal in a formally structured debate. Arriana Huffington in the debates prior to the 2003 California governor recall election comes springing to mind.

Forgive my ignorance of US state news, but is she the one who challenged Aunold to a debate? Or did she try to organise one?

There were a couple of televised debates that involved the 5 most prominent candidates. Huffington was just the most abominably poorly behaved of the lot during the debates. The sad thing is, before she opened her mouth like that, she was the candidate I respected the most of the bunch.

Debates can do that. Unfortunately it can be either nervousness or lack of understanding of the principles of debate. There have been endless arguments about the Nixon / Kennedy televised debate, some saying it was sweat on Nixon's face that did him in, some saying it was just Kennedy being comfortable, or even the lighting!
Interesting.

This must be the shortest visit ever.
I'll unsub from the group because it appears that the baggage that accompanies me has found these threads. It's unfair for you to have to put up with the ad hominem attacks derailing threads. It's a pity, because it seemed to be a group interested in debating issues rather than personalities.
Oh well.

Is it possible to get the word 'agnostic' removed from my description? I think that 'Liberal/atheist/rationalist' would now better describe my position.
Happy to explain why if someone wants to start a thread!

I have daily politics as I tend to agree with all at sometime. ( and of course disagree )
I have no religon as it causes more strife than it solves.
I like to think I can wax philosophical about most subjects.
Key: Complain about this post
