Hey, those are all good suggestions!
I'm going to try to take a sleeper into Edinburgh so I don't lose a day travelling (plus I've never been on a sleeper, let alone to Europe). If I can, I'm going to take a cycling tour from Dumfries to Castle Douglas to Thornhill and back to Dumfries, staying in a different B&B/hotel each night.
But I'm going to try to do some of the things you suggested, though I might have to save some of them until the next trip. (I'm sure there will be another one!)
Thanks!

My mother is from Dumfries, so I would love to hear all about your visit there...
There is the Burns Museum in Dumfries, I believe.
