I was toying with the idea of putting this up for Peer Review. It's totally useless information, but it may be of interest to someone.

It's deliberately short - I didn't want to go into the technicalities of VAT because there is already a very good Entry on that. I just wanted to explain the principle.

Comments anyone?

Surely it's use is annulled by having us all know about it?

maybe a sister entry on the idea of a check digit would work well with it? I feel that such an entry would be rather useful.

CAS numbers also have a check digit.

I think the idea of a sister entry would be good, although that may take a little bit of work and a lot of research. Check digits are used everywhere - barcodes, credit cards, airline tickets, passports, you name it!

I was really wondering whether this would stand on its own or if I should junk it.

This one has sat here for a while. Any further comments? I can sort out things and put them in tables if that will make the presentation better, but I don't want to do that if this is not suitable as a Guide Entry.
