A Conversation for The Spire of Dublin
Official Unveiling

The Spire of Dublin will be officially 'unveiled' today Monday 7-July-2003. There has been a problem with the lighting mechanism and they only got it working late last week, so the Spire is now finally complete.

A few months after the official unveiling the lights at the top of the spire started to fail. The problem has been sorted out, and the spire has lit up the Dublin sky over the winter. Easy to spot as you approach the city, its vertical strip of bright white light is quite distinct from all other visible lights.
I see it clearly from my bedroom window in Donnybrook, 2½ miles to the south. It stands head and shoulders (and torso and waist) above the rest of the city, surrounded by the many cranes of the current building boom (or the many booms of the current building cranes).
It does stand out.

But then, Dublin is a remarkably low city.
It does stand out.

Actually I'm no longer sure that what I see from my upstairs window is the Spire; there are so many cranes about, and they get lit up at night. I'll have to consult a map and compass.
It does stand out.

I know that what I see seven miles away as I walk through the park in the morning is the Spire.
It does stand out.

Yes, it is the spire I see from my bedroom. The cranes are back, but there were a few years of recession from 2008 on when they all disappeared and the spire was the only contender.
Wonder are the cranes going to recede again now?
It does stand out.

The cranes have all been idle for the last month, but they should be starting up again in a couple of weeks' time.
