A Conversation for Great International Breakfast Dishes

Grits and Porridge

I confess I've never actually eaten grits, only read of them in John Grisham thrillers and seen on the film My Cousin Vinny.

Nevertheless they strike me as an unusual breakfast, particularly with a splash of tabasco on. I believe they are made into some kind of starchy glop, but from what I don't know. oh! see A760150 - "coarsely ground hulled corn boiled as a breakfast dish in the southern United States". Yum Yum.

As I have recently started eating porridge regularly (not mentioned yet as a Scottish staple breakfast food) I tried it 'a la Grisham' with tabasco and a knob of butter on (rather than sweetened with sugar, jam or chocolate spread) and it was a very pleasant change.

Without the butter of course this is also dead healthy, oats being good at soaking up cholesterol in some way.

Grits are pretty much like polenta, lots of cooking and stirring involved. They are great with cheese and garlic, and they are good on their own if you can find someone who knows how to cook them correctly. Lard is definitely involved.

Instant grits are the spawn of Satan, but they will get you through a *severe* craving if you don't have an hour to spare.

Would you eat grits with cheese and garlic for breakfast though?

Absolutely, as long as they were piled on my cold pizza.

I really think it would depend on who would have to endure the garlic at the receiving end. Most of the restaurants down here serve home fries with onions, peppers, garlic, hot peppers and so on as a breakfast item. I figure if you can get around potatoes that way, you can get around some garlic and cheese grits.

I've never eaten grits but a friend of mine who regularly has to go to the USA assures me they are smiley - yuk

Anyone who involves maple syrup with breakfast obviously can't be trusted.

Grits are well named, but not so bad when properly buttered and salted, as for cheese and garlic - I don't think so.
As for the maple syrup comment, I dare you to come up north to my hometown in Canada and say that! smiley - laughsmiley - smiley

Growing up in Canada, my mother gave me a nice hot cup of maple syrup every morning for breakfast
