The Something and The Something Else
Seanie Posted Jun 21, 1999
Thats funny, there's a trend in UK to set up Aussie themed pubs, errr Irish themed pubs, errrr, American theme bars.... ooooh errr! Everything but British pubs!!!
More importantly though, when are we gonna scrap all this 'Last Orders' licencing laws rubbish?
Answers on a postcard to...
p.s. Scottish pubs need not apply! (nor most of the rest of the world for that matter!)

I don't know quite where the Crooked House is - I was visiting Britain from Australia at the time. I have e-mailed a cuz in England for the whereabouts and will let you know ASAP

The Crooked House Pub is just outside a town called Himster which is near Dudley in the West Midlands. (Dudley the place, not the person!) Can't be more accurate than that - my source tends to get rather inebriated whilst in the general area and relies on others to escort him back and forth. Anyway, most people of drinking age or thereabouts, who live in the area will be able to tell you where it is. So if ever you're in the general area, remember the Crooked House - its well worth a vist.

I'm new to this caper and replied to your message further down the page - I've immediately realised the error of my ways and decided I should tell you again. The Crooked House is just outside a town called Himster which is near Dudley in the West Midlands. See my message at this site to give other details about my lack of a more accurate address

I do it all the time, sometimes I can't be bothered in actually clicking on which one I want to reply to, but I am getting better at it

There's also the "Terminus' and 'The Star' ... but really, in most country towns there's the 'top'
pub and the 'bottom' pub - neither of which has anything to do with topography, anatomy, quality
or direction. But everybody seems to know which pub you mean when there's a declaration
after the footy game: "Meet you at the top pub". This phenomenon remains something of a
mystery, particularly if there are three pubs.

That must be really confusing, especially if there was heaps of alcohol drunk at the footy before hand.
This thread has also reminded that in 99% (I plucked it out of my head, but it should be right) of towns in Australia, there are 2 common buildings. The Australian Post Office (or shop), and a pub. It must be one of those life mysteries that can not be explained

I've developed a formula for quirky pub names. Try it out from my home page (Click on beeline above, then go to P97300).

That's cool, I can never work out where the message is gonna land myself either! - If I'm ever in Dudley I'll check it out... I actually live in the East Midlands and although thats not far by Ozzy proportions, its a fair way to go for a pint!!! Heh heh! - sounds like a top place though! - I'll go back and see what else I've missed further down in the list now!

the bikers pub in peterborough used to be called the chain and sprocket, before it changed hands and they barred them all.
we also have 2 irish theme pubs, 2 chain pubs (the old monk, and the college arms) 3 american theme bars. we also have one called the glass onion, no i dont understand why. according to camra the only decent pub in town is on that is in a boat, the top of the boat is a restaurant.

WE have loads of Irish bars. But I bet most sell pasties
Apparently there's a pub in St Andrews that sells practically every beer ever brewed.
I wonder why I'm going to go to Uni there?

There's a pub in Perry Barr (in the West Midlands) called The Seventh Trap because it is on the site of the old greyhound stadium. There is a mechanical grehound track around the ceiling and when it starts up the hares chase the greyhound round the track to the theme from Chariots of Fire!

You also forgot 'The Royal', 'The Imperial', 'The Telegraph' and 'The Tattersals'. At least English people are slightly creative with their names. Here in Australia they may as well be called 'The Drink' or 'The Stool' or 'The Horrid red carpet and timber panelling'

Oh, my recent forum entries list told me that the was a new entry in this forum. I am stuffed if I can find it. It should only be about 40 or so minutes earlier than this one. May be I have visited too many pubs like The Elephant and Bucket. *looks confused* Must be late in the afternoon at work. Don't worry about me I am just rambling.

I think it's because the posting was in reply to an earlier posting and therefore didn't appear at the end. I've encountered this before and found it difficult to find the latest posting.

maybe they should get the forum to go and show the newest entries first
somehow

I know it wasn't something in a sub thread. I checked the time of everyone of them. It was just a quirk of nature.
Anyway Swiv, I like your idea, but then again it also makes sense to read top to bottom

There's always the old fav. game of mixing the old and new names of pubs to confuse tourists/unwanted admirers of one's whereabouts
IE
The former "Dog & Donut" now called "Rattle & Hum" is frequently refered to by the cogni. as
"The rattling donut" or "The Dog & Hum" both of which are far superior to it's actual names.
NOTE -This is prob. easier understood (and funnier) after a pint.
