A Conversation for The Grackle: Gregarious Neighbour

I remember the first time I encountered grackles. I was entering a local shopping mall near Houston, Texas (possibly the same one where Sheldon Cooper developed a life-long antagonism toward "Santa Claus" on The Big Bang Theory). I heard them before I saw them. The trees lining the mall entrance were filled with grackles. The sounds they made were fascinating. I was quite young and prone to flights of imagination. I believed the mall had installed speakers in the trees to imitate tropical bird sounds, but that the speakers were possibly broken because of all the hisses, rattles, pops, & whistles that accompanied more traditional bird sounds. It took me several visits (being dragged along by my mother as I searched for the speakers or wire) to determine the true source of these sounds.

Since then I've become quite enthralled by these creatures. I love their sinister looking yellow eyes on the field of iridescent blue/black. I enjoyed watching them hunt in packs for insects in the grass outside my building at work. I love watching the males strut and dance, beaks in the air, wings spread and vibrating as they try to impress females and intimidate other males.

Yeah, some folks find them an annoyance, but not me. They're my favorite birds.

Thanks for the cool eyewitness account! I love them, too, when they show up in my yard. Bossy things, but they're beautiful.

I don't see them in my yard too often. We mostly get various sparrows, some cardinals, some blue jays, some ring neck and white doves that the occasional coopers or redtail hawk keep in check, and a few crows visit now and then.

But if I'm missing the grackles, I don't have to go far. About 5-6 short blocks away are a couple of competing fast food burger chains, Jack-in-the-Box and McDonald's where the grackles live high on the hog, as they say. Several hundred make that area their home.
