The Latest in Music, September 1920
If you click on that picture, you can read the magazine, and find out all the latest buzz in the world of musicians – exactly 100 years ago. They thought more women should be composers. They thought music teachers were underpaid. So far, so familiar. Instead of discussing the Shepard Tone, a French musician explains how 'Futurist' chords work. When history doesn't repeat itself, it rhymes.
Of course, the big draw is the sheet music included in each issue. Like the 'Toreador Song' from Carmen. No chord charts here, you've got to sight-read, and it's work. The 'Toreador Song' we get, but 1920 quickly becomes 'problematic': there's a fancy arrangement of, wait for it, 'Dixie'. Suitable for playing while tearing down a statue or two?
We're including here a little ditty you might enjoy, called 'Little Alpine Serenade', by Frances Terry. If you like, play it off the sheet music here. If you want to hear what it sounds like without doing the work yourself, click the picture, or look at the embedded video.
'The fundamental things apply as time goes by.'
