Little Peterkin could have been a Lucretia Hale character

I was interested by the quotation from Little Peterkin in Southey's "Battle of Blenheim." Peterkin could easily have a character in Lucretia Hale's "Peterkin papers." The original Peterkin Family story was "The woman who put salt in her coffee." Dear, sweet, clueless Mrs. Peterkin kept going to experts (the herb lady, the apothecary, etc.) to get the salty taste out of her coffee, but it just kept tasting worse and worse. Finally she went to the wise lady From Philadelphia, who advise her to sue some common sense: "Just pour the coffee down the drain and fix yourself a new one."

Little Peterkin's question about what it all meant was just the sort of common sense approach that would carry the day. smiley - smiley

Unfortunately, through numerous subsequent stories the lady from Philadelphia had to keep coming to the rescue with her common sense.
She seems to have had a bottomless supply of patience.

If she was a Quaker, she probably left Philadelphia because it was filling up with Philadelphia lawyers, which Quakers were not crazy about. smiley - erm

Still plenty of Quakers in Philadelphia, lawyers or no lawyers. smiley - smiley I used to live there and attend Quaker meetings in 18th-century meeting houses.

One of them, Arch Street Meeting, is the one where Ben Franklin visited on his first day in Philadelphia. He'd walked all the way from Boston.

So of course, he fell asleep in meeting...smiley - laugh

Well, not a cinnamon bun maybe, though the Colonists had cinnamon if they could afford it.

This is true: and, as Quite Interesting pointed out on Twitter this morning, they even had pineapples, which were a luxury item.

Nonexistence should not have a presence on the 'Net, but somehow there are 4,300,000 hits when you search for it on Google. That's a lot of nothing!
