One of the joys of childhood: annoying everybody with novelty songs.
Novelty Songs for Kids: Answers
Tricia learned a lot of songs as a toddler. She grew up to teach music to other kids. They probably liked 'Jeremiah was a bullfrog', too.
Here are the answers. You can share your favourites at the bottom of the page.
- The mush was as tasty as tasty could be,
And early next summer it grew to a tree. On Top of Spaghetti (Without doubt the most annoying song ever composed. It will make you gag if sung after dinner.) - Jeremiah was a bullfrog,
Was a good friend of mine. . .Joy to the World (A wine-drinking bullfrog: the perfect babysitter.) - I rode my bicycle past your window last night
I roller-skated to your door at daylight. . . I've Got a Brand-New Pair of Rollerskates, You've Got a Brand-New Key (They didn't know what it meant. Fortunately, the adults didn't catch on, either.) - Well you left me anyhow
And then the days got worse and worse
And now you see I've gone
Completely out of my mind. . . They're Coming to Take Me Away (Children have an innate affinity for the differently mentated.) - Slide down my rain barrel,
Into my cellar door
And we'll be jolly friends forevermore. Playmate, Come Out and Play with Me (An oldie but goodie.) - Well my daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to Ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze. . .A Boy Named Sue1 - Rollin', rollin', rollin'
Though the streams are swollen. . . Rawhide (I prefer the Scottish version.) - The prettiest tree
That you ever did see
Now, the tree in a hole
And the hole in the ground. . . The Green Grass Grew All Around (This one will make Dad turn the radio on in self-defence.) - Trailer for sale or rent, rooms to let, fifty cents.
No phone, no pool, no pets. . . King of the Road (Adults like this one, too.) - Remember, my darlin'
When spring is in the air,
And the bald-headed birds are whistlin' everywhere,
When you see them walkin' southward in their dirty underwear. . . The Tennessee Bird Walk (Maybe you had to be there, but that song cracks us up.)
Learn these songs. Teach them to your kids. Send them in the direction of Grandma and Grandpa. Let everybody share.
