Ah Athens! Spent time there in the 70s, en route for the islands, with backpack and drachma. This reminds me of everything! Thanks Gnomon! It also reminds me that I only ever saw the Acropolis and the Flea Market, so it was good to read about more aspects of Athens. Hmm. I missed everything. Have to return one day, perhaps.
Ah yes, the Flea Market ....or was I in the Tourist Market? ..where you could buy cotton drawstring trousers and stripy cheesecloth shirts and sandals and rugs and pottery and inexpensive tacky souvenirs, haha, 
, and still return home with enough money to buy a sandwich at Heathrow.
