It sounds very interesting, both as a story about people, and also the format! I once read a children's book where you would choose the next step and go to the corresponding page, but it was very 'thin' in plot. This sounds like the real deal

Was that a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' book? I love them when I was young. Looking back I can see that the choices you could make were actually quite restricted, but it was fun at the time.
But yeah, with 253 you are given the links to other characters, it's entirely up to you which links you follow, or you could read in sequence, or jump randomly from one person to the next. You have a completely free choice of which bit to read next.
