The North Shore communities which mainly consist of the municipalities of North and West Vancouver, are situated at the foot of the coastal mountain range peaks of Cypress, Grouse, and Seymour mountains and all provide local skiing within a short distance of the city see http://www.coastandmountains.com/page.cfm/903
The mountainous area on the north shore provides a relatively unspoilt forest wilderness, which trives in the temperate wet weather, althought large areas of the mountain at lower levels have been forested and are second growth forest, there is still a large amount of untouched old growth hemlock, douglas fir forest remaining. The mountains also provide a fairly isolated watershed catchment for the citys water supply.
In all the north shore mountains are an ideal playground for the city, and are treasured by visitors and residents.
