A Conversation for How to Make Salt Dough Decorations

An alternative to air drying clay.

What I liked about this 'recipe' wasn't just that my son and I had a happy couple of days making and painting the decorations as described, or that he got to give them out as Christmas presents to his favourite adults (we got a bit carried away and made lots), or that we have managed to pack most of the remaining ones away without too many breakages, but that the salt dough seems to be a good alternative to air drying clay.

Air drying clay being what gets recommended on the CBEEBIES programme, Mr Maker a lot for all sorts of projects. Now I adore Mr Maker (it's the waistcoat) but air drying clay isn't particularly easy to come by near me, and salt dough is dead easy to make with everyday household ingredients and, of course, extremely cheap.

The salt is fierce though. Next time we're wearing the washing up gloves.
