Its Importance was obvious (to me).
It was the trigger that sparked off technology, starting, of course, with navigation then spreading to instrumentation and hence in ever-widening ripples.

Nowadays of course those thoughts are seen to be a degree off target. Nevertheless, I do sometimes allow myself to wonder if someone put it there, coming back later to build a polytechnic monolith.

smiley - sigh They're due for a revisit pretty soon, I surmise.

Gnomon - time to move on

Nobody put it there, because Polaris wasn't the north star for much of recorded history. It's only been the north star for a few centuries.
