Wasn't Del Shannon recruited to replace the late Roy Orbison, only to take his own life after only making a few recordings?

I did come across that story, but to be honest I don't think he was ever a member. I think he was working with Jeff Lynne before his death, but my research didn't throw up any real truth behind the rumour. No Wilburys/Del Shannon songs have been released to my knowledge.
