Interesting entry. All I rerally knew about Mersea before was the tides - I made a brief visit there in September and very nearly got cut off. We lingered too long over our pub lunch and made it off the island with minutes to spare. People in cars coming in the opposite direction (you could only *just* use both lanes) applauded us as we left.

Well if you were driving through the water I hope you remembered that it was salty and washed it down well soon afterwards otherwise you may end up with little or no car left!
There is most definately a community feel on the island and the applause you experienced shows that it still lives on even though I am no longer there to experience it often.
